Know Alabama is an attempt to help non-Alabamians know Alabama and to help Alabamians
know Alabama better. The book of 250-plus poems represents only a handful of the good
things about Alabama. I wanted to write about every nook and cranny in the State, but early in the
project, I realized it just wasn't possible. The good things about Alabama's places, people, and
natural wonders would fill volumes, and I'd simply run out of time and paper if I tried to put them
all into words. Know Alabama contains a mere sampling of Alabama's many glorious offerings.
I hope Know Alabama piques your curiosity about our State and entices you to learn more about
it. As you read the poems, you'll recognize some of the places mentioned. If you don't
recognize a place, look it up on the Alabama map that comes with the book. You may know
some of the people you read about. You may even find yourself in the pages of Know Alabama!
Get yourself a glass of cold sweet tea, a copy of Know Alabama and prepare to be reminded
how lucky you are to live in such a wonderful State. If you're not from Alabama - well, bless your
heart!
What's your favorite spot in Alabama? E-mail me at
teelpeggy@yahoo.com, and I'll post your favorite on
peggyteel.net. Here's what some Alabamians had to say:
A rock off the blue trail in Oak Mountain State Park where my then boyfriend, now
husband first dreamed of our future together...
The Mulberry and Locust Fork rivers where I've spent many days paddling whitewater
and felt closer to God than anywhere, even on Sunday mornings...
Little River Canyon for all its majesty...
Vulcan Park, an important milestone in my life...
Home, where I am most safe, comfortable and content.

By the way, do you know where my
favorite spot is in Alabama? Wherever
I happen to be!

"Peggy Teel is an ambassador for Alabama.
Her lyrical and compelling poems capture the
rich beauty and diversity of the state, its
history, culture, geography, and people."
Dr. Sue Walker
Alabama Poet Laureate
"The book is a delight....I know that I will
share copies with my family and friends."
Patsy Riley
First Lady of Alabama
"Teel's touch is as light as the slightest ripples on
Second Creek, her eye as sharp as those of the hawks
gliding over Hawk's Glide, her voice as playful as a
whirligig in a yard on County Road 11. And this
collection is as refreshing as a tall, side-sweating glass
of sweet tea...anywhere."

My favorite place in Alabama is the Redmont neighborhood in Birmingham. Our
street is a crescent with lovely houses built in the early 1900's and beautiful views of
the city. The couples on our street get together for brunches, parties, chili cook-offs
and weekly cocktail hours. We're even taking a vacation to Italy together next spring.
I love that there are lots of little neighborhoods in Alabama where people feel that
same sense of community and camaraderie that we feel in Redmont. I can't imagine
ever moving, because my neighborhood is so nice to come home to.

My favorite place in Alabama is my
home town of Huntsville, which is in a
valley with beautiful mountains all
around. It's especially beautiful in the
autumn.

I was reared in Shinbone Valley and moved to the Bynum area when my
husband went to work at the Anniston Army Depot. Life has been very good
to me and I am now 83 years old and am very proud of my living in both
areas. Just plain ordinary good living in Alabama and a wonderful family of 3
children, 7 grandchildren, and 17 great grandchildren.

My favorite place has to be Gulf Shores, once only a
sleepy little fishing village and now home to over
5,000, not to speak of the "snowbirds" who spend
winter months in our great State of Alabama.
